39th IAH Niagara Falls Congress

Join Us at IAH 2012 Niagara Falls!

September 16 – 21, 2012

We are now less than one year away from IAH 2012 Niagara Falls. The organizing committee has been hard at work for the past three years planning for this event and we’re pleased to report that things are starting to fall into place.

From September 16 to 21, 2012 we will be meeting at the beautiful Sheraton on the Falls Hotel, which sits just downstream of, and overlooks, Niagara Falls. The hotel has wonderful rooms for guests and is linked to a casino and an indoor water park next door. IAH 2012 Niagara Falls could turn into a holiday for the entire family! With the leaves just starting to change to their fall colours of red, orange and yellow, September is a perfect month to travel to Ontario, Canada!

Call for Abstracts Coming Soon

Look for the opening of the call for abstracts/papers module of the IAH 2012 Niagara Falls website on December 1, 2011. If you have colleagues who should be on our E-news list to receive the Call for Abstracts notice, please be sure to direct them to the home page at www.iah2012.org to sign up for our newsletter.

Technical Program Planning Well Underway

The theme of IAH 2012 Niagara Falls is Confronting Global Change – our technical program will focus on the profound environment, economic, technological, and political changes that are occurring at a global scale. Technical sessions will cover many topics across the breadth of groundwater science. Visit the Congress website at http://www.iah2012.org for more information.

Plenary Session Speakers Confirmed

We have invited four of Canada’s world-renown hydrogeologists to be our plenary speakers at IAH 2012 Niagara Falls:

  • Dr. John Cherry
  • Dr. Allan Freeze
  • Dr. Frank Schwartz and
  • Dr. Jozef Toth

All have graciously agreed to be our featured speakers. These will be talks that you won’t want to miss!

Proposed Field Trips

Several field trips are in the works – here are the details on three post-conference field trips currently in development:

  • The first trip will be 3 to 4 days duration and will focus on the Quaternary geology and hydrogeology of the Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence Lowlands. The trip will start in Niagara Falls and wind along the north shoreof Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River, finishing up in the beautiful and historical Provincial capital city of Quebec City.
  • A second 2 to 3 day trip will head into Canada’s famous Canadian Shield region to take advantage of the beautiful fall colours that surround the Shield’s many lakes. The trip will travel to the Sudbury Basin, one of Canada’s most important mining areas and the location of the second largest impact crater on earth.
  • A third shorter trip will head for the Niagara Escarpment and Oak Ridges Moraine areas to the west and north of Toronto with a focus on surface water-groundwater interaction and urban groundwater issues.

Prior to the conference join us for a leisurely biking tour of the Niagara Parkway.

Take a Look at our Social Program

In addition to a strong technical program, the committee has also been working to ensure that your visit is memorable from a social point of view. We have arranged for the conference gala dinner to be held at the Elements Restaurant, which sits on the brink of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Beneath the restaurant, we will have exclusive access to the tunnels that lead underneath and behind Niagara Falls. Take the elevator to the bottom of the falls and gaze up in wonder and amazement as nearly 5,400 m3 of water, the drainage from over 400,000 square kilometres of the North American continent, drops over 50 m into the NiagaraGorge each second!

2012 also marks the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, an important event in Canadian history. The Niagara area played a key role in the war and the Canadian government has just announced plans for country-wide celebrations next year. Look for 19th century British soldiers to be a part of our Canadian Congress celebration.

While in Niagara Falls the Congress will also provide opportunities to visit local award winning wineries. We are also planning a road hockey game – come and take on your Canadian colleagues in one of Canada’s most celebrated sports. Look for the Wednesday night alumni events to be held after our field trip day which will visit many of the local geological and tourist spots surrounding Niagara Falls.
